Mariah The Scientist Drops New Album- 'Hearts Sold Separately'

Updated: Sep 17

Toronto, ON — R&B star Mariah The Scientist has officially released her much-anticipated fourth studio album, "Hearts Sold Separately", marking a significant achievement in a breakout year that has already produced two entries on the Billboard Hot 100 and a chart-topping single on Apple Music.

Under the label-Epic Records, this 10-track album -"Sacrifice", "United Nations + 1000 Ways To Die", "Eternal Flame", "Is It a ", "Burning Blue", "All I Want + In Pursuit", "More ", "Rainy Days ", "Like You Never ", "No More Entertainers ". Mariah’s work airs a combination of personal songwriting, emotional resonance, and polished production. With executive production by Nineteen85, Hearts Sold Separately includes the hit tracks "Burning Blue" — a Top 25 Billboard hit — and "Is It a Crime?" featuring Kali Uchis.

The album's latest single, “Sacrifice,” dives deep into themes of heartbreak and identity, setting the tone for an emotionally rich body of work that Rolling Stone has already dubbed “her best yet — a tight, cohesive 10 tracks of literary, diaristic songwriting and expansive production.”

"Ain't nothing that I wouldn't give / All my love and even earthly gifts..." She conveys complete dedication to her beloved, prepared to offer everything—both emotionally and materially. They view their partner as the one who brings purpose and significance to their life. With, "All my secrets, now you truly hold / Thinking I might really be in love," and "Never found a man who I could trust," both indicating a profound level of trust, not just merely smitten; feeling secure and emotionally vulnerable, for perhaps the first time, they believe in authentic love.

Pre chorus, she sings, "It's been at least three hundred days / I got stuck in your maze...," and "I'm all out of pages to turn / So I'll read this out loud." "Stuck in a maze" may symbolize being emotionally overwhelmed or lost in the intricacies of love. Yet, has no wish to escape anymore—it feels right, despite its difficulties—nothing left to conceal or dissect. It's a candid, heartfelt declaration of love.

"Tell me I'm falling for someone who saved me from myself," the lyrics make clear her partner isn’t just a partner—but a savior. The narrator believes they’ve been rescued from their own self-sabotage or emotional wounds.

At its essence, the song tells the story of a person who has endured suffering, remorse, and perhaps a path of self-destruction—only to discover redemption and change through a profound and significant romantic bond.

Burning Blue's central theme revolves around the deep emotional intensity and vulnerability that accompanies falling head over heels in love. The lyrics portrays being emotionally "cold" or protective—someone who has been toughened by previous experiences—until they encounter a passionate, fiery partner who breaks down their walls.

Even with the potential for pain, they fully commit to the relationship, choosing to disregard external judgments and past anxieties as long as their partner remains by their side. The song encapsulates both the excitement and peril of love—how it can heal and ignite passion yet also possesses the capacity to devastate if trust is compromised. In the end, it’s a bold statement of being "all in," engulfed by the flames of love, even if it scorches.

"Burning Blue" marked her first Apple Music No. 1 this year and earned her RIAA Gold certification, which was awarded during a special ceremony in Chicago earlier this month.

At the same time, her collaboration with Kali Uchis on "Is It a Crime?" granted her a second entry on the Hot 100 — a milestone as it’s the first occasion she’s had two singles on the chart at once.

Is it a crime? How's it a crime? No...../'Cause if loving me is jail, then you're my prisoner...../So let me throw away this key 'cause you won't give me up....../Let 'em know we don't give a fuck......./All they want is to see us breaking up (Ooh)....../You can search the Seven Seas and never find, no...../A heart like mine......./Better yet, can't forget my mind, no......../Some may say a girl shouldn't lay her cards on the table...../Well, I'm a woman, l'm not a girl...../Is that a crime in this cruel world?

The lyric challenge the criticism and scrutiny people have faced falling in love more than once, questioning why loving deeply—or repeatedly—should be seen as something shameful or wrong. The lyrics push back against societal expectations, gossip, and outdated norms, asserting that real love—however imperfect or unconventional—is valid and worth defending.

[Chorus: Mariah the Scientist].....And so what?..../I fell, you fell in love a couple times....../Tell me, what's it to ya? Tell me, is it a crime......./To fall, to fall in love, in love a couple times?....../Tell me, what's it to ya? Tell me, is it a crime to fall?

[Outro: Mariah the Scientist].......I fell, you fell in love a couple times......./Tell me, what's it to ya? Tell me, is it a crime...../To fall, to fall in love a couple times?..../What's it to ya? Is it a crime to fall?

They portray love not as a weakness or failure, but as a personal and fearless choice, refusing to apologize for following their hearts. Ultimately, the song is an anthem of emotional honesty, self-assurance, and defiance against those who try to diminish or define their experiences.

“There’s just so many different facets to love. I feel like it’s so romanticized, which is cute – I wish it was that great every single day, but that’s not the case. Most days it is great, but it is really the collective journey,” said Mariah. “Everybody has their own individual growing and evolution and journey, and then it’s a totally separate thing where you’re doing it together. Most people will grow apart, so, it’s like an active effort grow with somebody.”(Source:AP)

"More" focuses on a profound desire for connection, affection, and tranquility amidst feelings of solitude, rejection, and uncertainty. The words convey a path characterized by emotional seclusion and an ongoing quest for "home"—not merely a location, but a sense of being comprehended, embraced, and genuinely acknowledged.

[Verse 1] I slept through all my days...../Every one a sleepless night...../I tried so many ways...../I tried a thousand times...../'Til the voice in my head says...../You're the only one of your kind...../The only one feeling betrayed...../'Cause in everybody's eyes....../You're doing it wrong...../Nowhere to confide....../Been everywhere but home....../Here to Rome, but still you were denied....../Wanted to love...../Wanted to live lifе....../Instead you were all alonе, all alone...../It was you, yourself, and your pride

[Verse 2]I crept through all the fame...../Every fan and flashing light...../There were ones who kept you sane...../And there was some who made you cry....../'Til the voice in your head says...../Is there anymore to this life?...../Is there anyone who remains?...../When everyone has said goodbye

[Verse 3] And I've had plenty friends....../That all seem to come and go....../And I've known many loves...../But none that I call home....../And I've got plenty sense...../Despite all my mistakes...../And love all the ones that I've made...../I know there's a place

In spite of outward achievements, temporary bonds, and the facade of intimacy, the lyrics confronts the truth that they have been journeying through life predominantly in solitude, steered solely by their own strength and dignity.

While "No More Entertainers" delves into the emotional consequences of falling for someone who was never genuinely committed beyond mere physical attraction. What started as a seemingly innocent bond transforms into a painful entanglement, where authentic emotions clash with emotional distance and pretense.

[Chorus]Fall this deep, fall this deep....../I know I'll never be yours....../I never meant to......../Fall this deep, fall this deep......./I know you'll never be more...../You're just an entertainer

[Post-Chorus] Whеn all is jaded......./And nothing satisfies me........../Triеd to replace it....../Tried to make sacrifices...../Time was wasted..../Times you let me fantasize...../All for entertainment

The lyrics contemplates the indistinct boundaries between closeness and deception, coming to the realization too late that the other individual was merely "an entertainer"—a person adept at portraying the role of a partner without any true feelings involved. Despite yearning for a real connection, the narrator finds themselves heartbroken, doubting the authenticity of it all and struggling with the pain of being deceived by affection that was never sincere.

With every track is penned by Mariah herself, the album unfolds like a confessional diary — delving into themes of love, self-sacrifice, and emotional resilience. The rich yet minimalist production, combined with her haunting vocal delivery, creates a captivating backdrop for her most vulnerable work to date.

Hearts Sold Separately can now be streamed on all major platforms.
