AI Generated Hoax: Ex-Athletic Director Arrested, Victim Exonerated & Baltimore County Police Continues Investigating

On Thursday afternoon, the police announced that they have strong evidence, confirmed through forensic analysis conducted by the FBI, indicating that the recording in question was not genuine.

Baltimore County Police detained the former athletic director of Pikesville High School, accusing him of using artificial intelligence to mimic Principal Eric Eiswert's voice. This action allegedly led to the distributions of false racist and antisemitic comments attributed to Eiswert, as reported by the Baltimore Banner.

Dazhon Darien, aged 31, faces charges of disrupting school activities for allegedly falsifying Eiswert's voice and spreading the audio on social media in January (audio clip was first posted on an Instagram account-murder_ink_bmore). Additionally, he is accused of theft and intimidation of a witness regarding alleged unauthorized payments made to a school athletics coach. Darien, also known as DJ, was granted release on a $5,000 bond and opted not to have an attorney present during his initial court appearance, according to court documents.

The Baltimore Banner states that the contentious audio, purportedly featuring Eiswert's voice making offensive remarks towards Black students and the Jewish community, was widely circulated on social media. While some current and former students believed the audio implicated Eiswert, others defended his character, with Eiswert himself denying the allegations.

The distribution of the audio prompted investigations by Baltimore County Public Schools and the police, resulting in Eiswert's absence from the school since the investigation began. The investigation into Darien stems from a theft probe initiated by Eiswert in December, wherein Darien allegedly authorized a payment to a basketball coach under false pretenses.

Police assert that the audio clip was initially sent to three teachers, including Darien, before its viral spread. One of the teachers, Shaena Ravenell, allegedly forwarded the clip to a student who then disseminated it across social media platforms and to various individuals and organizations, including the media and the NAACP.

Both Darien and Ravenell have submitted their resignations to the school system, effective June 30th.

On Thursday afternoon, the police announced that they have strong evidence, confirmed through forensic analysis conducted by the FBI, indicating that the recording in question was not genuine. The analysis revealed traces of AI-generated content within the recording. Subsequently, detectives sought a corroborating analysis from the University of California, Berkeley, which yielded the same results as the FBI's findings.

According to the charging documents (WbalTV), Eiswert believed that Darien was behind the creation of the clip, reasoning that Darien possessed technical skills and familiarity with AI. Eiswert's grievance against Darien stemmed from the non-renewal of Darien's contract due to performance issues at work.

Investigators managed to link an email account to Darien, which was used to send the original audio clip.

Darien, aged 31, was arrested on Thursday at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport while en route to Houston. Maryland Transportation Authority police stopped him after questioning the packaging of a firearm he had declared, ultimately discovering an outstanding warrant for his arrest related to the Pikesville case.
