On Friday morning, residents in surrounding states and even New York City felt the ground shake due to a 4.8 magnitude earthquake that struck New Jersey. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake occurred around 5 miles north of Whitehouse Station at approximately 10:23 a.m. Although the epicenter was about 45 miles away from New York City, residents there still experienced furniture and floors trembling.
Thankfully, there have been no major disruptions or damage reported in either New Jersey or New York. Governor Kathy Hochul of New York mentioned that the earthquake was felt throughout the state, and authorities are currently evaluating the impacts and potential damage caused. She said,“A 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit west of Manhattan and has been felt throughout New York. My team is assessing impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day”.
The earthquake's impact was widely experienced by residents and officials across New York, as well as in neighboring states like New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. Surprisingly, its tremors even reached as far as Cambridge, Massachusetts, a staggering 250 miles away from the epicenter.
