Unlock Your Potential: Find a Career You Are Passionate About

Updated: Dec 1, 2023

Our world contains a wide range of manufactured goods, machines, and parts that are produced, distributed, sold, used, and discarded when they are no longer useful. While I admire those who work in landscape maintenance, it is not a job that I feel capable of doing myself.

A friend has told me that the mark of a suitable profession is being comfortable discussing it without feeling ashamed. In my case, I am proud to have served in the Marines. This organization is responsible for creating the best fighting force in the world and promoting the ideals of democracy across the globe. We are equipped to defend ourselves, offer top-notch support, and communicate efficiently, all while fulfilling our objectives on time.

Sadly, war is a terrible experience, a military personnel does both pleasant and unpleasant tasks. And in my opinion, many of us didn't sign up for this kind of work and frequently voice our dissatisfaction. Although, a few of us originally joined the military to explore new places, but the irony is that we seem to only encounter terrible weather and hostile attitudes. It's difficult to imagine a recruiter enticing us with promises of world travel when we've spent the past several years in various locations such as Baghdad, Bosnia, Afghanistan and many others to mention. It would be great if they could add a complimentary journey to Liberia to sweeten the deal.

Conveying to a service member that the grass is never greener on the other side can be a challenging task since the places they are usually deployed to don't offer the luxury of green grass. However, there are some positive aspects of war. Marines are required to dwell in unpleasant places, and this is a serious matter for them and their families. Remarkably, they enjoy it. I found it amusing when Marines claimed that their job is the most strenuous job worldwide- where they sleep in the dirt, carry heavy backpacks on hikes, and go to places they wouldn't have visited on vacations. Despite these challenges, they are compensated and believe it is the best job ever.

It is important to understand that Marines are very passionate about their jobs and take great pride in being a part of the exclusive and distinguished group known as “The Few, The Proud”. They are extremely confident and assertive, much like game roosters, and are not easily intimidated.

While it can be a grueling and challenging career, Marines relish in the experience and view it as an unmatched opportunity to travel the world, endure extreme conditions, and accomplish incredible feats. Any young person considering a career in the military should seriously consider joining the Marines and start by visiting their local recruitment center to sign on the dotted line.

My intention with this piece is not to recruit for the United States Marines. Rather, we should all strive to fulfill our individual destinies. It's important to recognize when something is working well and to avoid introducing unnecessary changes that could potentially create new problems. For example, an artist will always have a creative spark regardless of their chosen career path, while a teacher will always possess the fundamental skills of teaching, regardless of their specific field. Each individual is vital to the overall functioning of society, much like a wheel in a machine. It's crucial to discover what drives you personally and to nurture that passion, for it may lead you to exactly where you are meant to be.
