U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Advices Consumers on Listeriosis (Listeria Monocytogenes) Outbreak

The FDA advises against consuming, selling, or serving recalled brands of cheeses, sour creams (cremas), or yogurts produced by Rizo Lopez Foods, Inc., as well as products made with recalled dairy items.

On February 5, 2024, the FDA began an on-site inspection at Rizo Lopez Foods, Inc., which is still ongoing. During the inspection, an additional environmental sample was taken and has tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) analysis of the sample revealed that it is the same strain of Listeria responsible for illnesses in this outbreak. In response to this investigation, Rizo Lopez Foods, Inc. has voluntarily initiated a recall.

The FDA has been informed of other companies that have issued public notifications or recalls for products linked to the Rizo-Lopez Foods, Inc. dairy recall, which were sold at retail locations. The table of recalled products now includes items from the following announcements: Bright Farms, Campesino, Casa Cardenas, Dole, Don Francisco, Don Pancho, Dos Ranchitos, El Huache, Food City, Fresh & Ready Foods, Fresh Express, H-E-B, Jack & Olive, La Ordena, Marketside, Maverick Foods, President’s Choice, Ready Pac Bistro, Rio Grande, Rizo Bros, Rojos, San Carlos, Santa Maria, Sprig & Sprout (S&S), The Perfect Bite Co., Tio Francisco, Trader Joe’s and 365 Whole Foods Market.

Additionally, Bristol Farms has recalled its Chicken Taco Kit 9oz with a Sell By date of 1/18/24, sold at various California retail locations. Products sold unbranded as taco kits, wraps, and meals were available at the following retailers: Albertsons, Bristol Farms, Carrs-Safeway, Costco, Eagle, Lucky, Pavilions, Randalls, Safeway, Save Mart, Shaw's, Sprouts (S&S), Star Market, Stater Bros. Markets, Tom Thumb and Vons

Listeriosis symptoms typically begin within two weeks of consuming contaminated food but can appear as soon as the same day or as late as 10 weeks afterward. Mild symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, and diarrhea. In more severe cases, symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.

The FDA advises against consuming, selling, or serving recalled brands of cheeses, sour creams (cremas), or yogurts produced by Rizo Lopez Foods, Inc., as well as products made with recalled dairy items. Check your refrigerators and freezers for any recalled products and dispose of them. If you have a frozen product without its original packaging and are unsure if it is part of the recall, discard it.

Consumers, restaurants, and retailers who bought or received recalled products, including wholesale items, should thoroughly clean and sanitize any surfaces or containers they came into contact with. Follow the FDA's guidelines for safe handling and cleaning to minimize the risk of cross-contamination. Listeria can survive in refrigerated temperatures and easily spread to other foods and surfaces. If you experience symptoms of listeriosis, contact your healthcare provider to report your symptoms and seek medical attention.
