To Work Or Not To Work

Updated: Oct 12, 2022

I'm cautious to bring up this topic with the people in my life because it involves multiple delicate issues and is a matter of privilege.

I was a full-time college student at the time, employed part-time, and separated from my spouse since I was working for my degree while he was stationed two states away. I resigned since my job was terminated and all of my classes were made available online following the lock-down. I then moved in with my spouse. (I'm very glad I did; it's wonderful to no longer be in a long-distance relationship!)

I applied for unemployment and a few jobs in my field as soon as I arrived at my new residence. After more than a month, I received approval for unemployment benefits and am now receiving additional funds as part of the pandemic response in addition to the monthly salary I would have earned if I had continued working. I am 36 years old, and I am currently making more money per week from unemployment than I ever have. We can now unwind a little after worrying about money continually for so long as we pay off some debt (I have student loans and a car payment). Astounding.

One of the jobs I applied for when I first arrived here called me back last week. Although the employment is not directly related to my field, it may be an excellent opportunity for experience, and it looks like they place a lot of emphasis on teaching and training. It may be an absolutely perfect fit, and ordinarily I'd jump at the chance to work part-time while attending my online classes. The problem is that the position pays significantly less—a few hundred dollars less each week—than the unemployment benefits I currently receive. That adds up to a couple thousand dollars over the following several months.

Being cooped up indoors is making me a little crazy because I want to work, learn new skills, and be productive. Although I would LOVE to accept this position, doing so would jeopardize my financial security. What kind of upside-down situation am I in, exactly? Should I accept the job if they give it to me?
