Terry Jon Martin, age 76, has been given a sentence for stealing the iconic "Ruby Slippers" from the beloved 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz"

The stolen item in question is none other than a pair of authentic ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland herself in the iconic 1939 film, "The Wizard of Oz." These ruby slippers hold immense historical and sentimental value, making them one of the most recognizable pieces of American film memorabilia.

Chief Judge Patrick J. Schiltz of the U.S. District Court in Duluth, Minnesota, has made a significant ruling in the case of Terry Jon Martin. The 76-year-old resident of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, has been sentenced to time served, along with one year of supervised release and a restitution payment of $23,500 to the Judy Garland Children's Museum. This ruling comes after Martin was found guilty of stealing a valuable piece of cultural heritage from the museum's care.

Thankfully, the FBI and the Grand Rapids Police Department were able to recover the stolen slippers in July 2018.

“It took brains, heart, and courage to bring this case to a successful conclusion, and those are qualities our FBI partners have in spades,” Schneider said. “This result is the product of determined efforts by FBI investigators. They secured the safe return of an iconic piece of Americana and, working together with our career prosecutors, provided a measure of justice in this case.”

“The FBI, in collaboration with our law enforcement partners, worked diligently to bring this case to a resolution," said Special Agent in Charge Alvin M. Winston Sr. of FBI Minneapolis. "Today's sentencing underscores our commitment to safeguarding iconic artifacts. The FBI will continue to investigate and hold accountable those who seek to exploit and unlawfully acquire pieces of historical memorabilia."

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI Art Crime Team, along with the Grand Rapids, MN, Police Department, conducted a thorough investigation into this case. They received support from FBI Salt Lake City and the case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Greenley from the District of North Dakota.

This ruling serves as a reminder that theft of cultural artifacts will not go unpunished. The restitution payment will help support the Judy Garland Children's Museum in preserving and showcasing the rich legacy of Judy Garland and her contributions to the world of entertainment. Justice has been served, and the stolen ruby slippers can now be returned to their rightful place, ensuring that future generations can appreciate their significance.
