Paul Maucha, 58 Kenyan National Residing in Washington, D.C., Convicted of Advance Fee & Investment Fraud Scheme

Maucha has been found guilty by the jury on multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and engaging in monetary transactions with criminally derived property

Yesterday, a Kenyan national was found guilty by a federal jury in Washington, D.C. for orchestrating a fraudulent scheme that deceived numerous victims through an advance fee and investment fraud. The evidence presented during the trial and court documents revealed that Paul Maucha, a 58-year-old residing in Washington, D.C., collaborated with a co-conspirator to carry out this scheme using a shell company called American Eagle Services Group Inc. (AESG), which Maucha controlled.

Their modus operandi involved making false representations to victims about AESG, its assets, and its access to funds and capital. Specifically, Maucha, operating through AESG, made promises to victims who were seeking loans, assuring them that AESG would provide the loans as long as the victims paid an advanced fee. However, Maucha misrepresented the purpose of this fee. AESG also falsely claimed that the advance fees could be refunded if the loan was not funded.

During the trial, it was proven that Maucha and his co-conspirator were well aware that AESG did not possess the necessary capital to fulfill these loan agreements at the time they were executed. As a result, refunds to victims were uncertain because Maucha and his co-conspirator were pocketing the fees for themselves, leaving no money available for refunds.

Maucha has been found guilty by the jury on multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and engaging in monetary transactions with criminally derived property. The sentencing is set for May 16, where he could face a maximum of 20 years in prison for each wire fraud and conspiracy count, and 10 years for each count of engaging in monetary transactions with criminally derived property. The final decision on the sentence will be made by a federal district court judge, who will consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other relevant factors.
