Troopers apprehended a man from Prince George's County on Wednesday following an investigation by the Maryland State Police Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. The investigation uncovered evidence of the suspect, Jason Pereira, 40, possessing child pornography.
Pereira has been charged with eight counts of possession of child pornography. He has been taken to the Prince George's County Detention Center and will remain there until his initial appearance with a District Court Commissioner.
The Maryland State Police Computer Crimes Unit launched an investigation into online child pornography possession in September 2023. On Wednesday, with the assistance of Homeland Security Investigations and the Laurel City Police, the Maryland State Police executed a search warrant at the suspect's residence. Pereira was apprehended at the scene. A preliminary examination of his electronic devices revealed numerous images of child pornography.
The Maryland State Police Computer Crimes Unit is responsible for overseeing the operations of the Maryland Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. This collaborative initiative brings together various police departments from across the state of Maryland, and it is made possible through the generous grant funds provided by the Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention, Youth and Victim Services, as well as a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Justice. The dedicated investigators of the task force are committed to identifying individuals involved in child pornography and other internet-related crimes that harm innocent children.
