Investigation Into The Listeria Monocytogenes Outbreak: Peaches, Plums, And Nectarines (Nov. 2023)

Updated: Dec 3, 2023

The retail stores have issued a recall for the conventional (non-organic) peaches, plums, and nectarines that were sold between May 1, 2022, and November 15, 2022, as well as between May 1, 2023, and November 15, 2023. These fruits were sold under various brand names and were available in bags or as individual pieces of fruit with PLU stickers (FDA’s investigation is ongoing) .

The multistate outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections associated with peaches, plums, and nectarines is currently being investigated by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) and CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), in collaboration with state and local partners. As new cases continue to emerge, federal and state authorities have been actively working to identify the source of the outbreak.

Samples were collected from sick individuals between August 22, 2018, and August 16, 2023. A case-case analysis conducted by the CDC revealed that individuals affected by this outbreak were 18 times more likely to have consumed peaches, plums, or nectarines, indicating that these fruits are a probable source of the contamination.

On October 23, 2023, the FDA collected samples of 2lb bagged peaches from The HMC Group Cold Storage, Inc in Kingsburg, CA. Subsequently, on November 7, 2023, the samples tested positive and were found to match the outbreak strain through Whole Genome Sequencing.

In response to this investigation, HMC Farms has taken the voluntary step of recalling peaches, plums, and nectarines that were sold in retail stores between May 1, 2022, and November 15, 2022, as well as between May 1, 2023, and November 15, 2023. The recalled fruit was sold individually with PLU stickers or in consumer packaging.

However, it is important to note that the recalled fruit is no longer available for sale, and any previously purchased fruit should have exceeded its shelf life. If you have frozen any of the recalled fresh peaches, plums, and nectarines, it is advised to discard them if they are part of the recall or if you are unable to determine if they are included.

It is important to highlight that fresh whole peaches, plums, and nectarines currently being sold at retail stores are not affected by this recall.

The FDA's investigation is still ongoing to determine the exact source of contamination and whether other products may be linked to the illnesses. As more information becomes available, the FDA will provide updates on this matter.
