After a long hiatus, the full ensemble of Sankofa Dance Theater will reunite for these performances—an extraordinary event, as the company has not performed together since 2010. Both shows will take place from '3:30 to 5 p.m'. in the BMA’s Meyerhoff Auditorium and will showcase an intergenerational cast, many of whom have been with the troupe since their teenage years in the 1990s. Tickets are available online through Eventbrite for $28.52, with an option for a performance and signed book package at $108.55.

In addition to the performances, attendees can also engage in free drum and dance workshops earlier in the day. Drum workshops led by artistic directors King Salim Ajanku and Jumoke Ajanku start at 10 a.m., followed by dance workshops at 11 a.m. with founder Kibibi Ajanku and other veteran dancers. No prior experience is needed, and participants of all ages are welcome—drums will be provided, but pre-registration is encouraged.

Founded in 1989, the Sankofa Dance Theater has captivated audiences with its dynamic presentations of traditional music and dance from the Senegambia region of West Africa. The name "Sankofa," derived from the Akan tribe of Ghana, translates to "go back and get it," emphasizing the importance of learning from the past. The company has played a vital role in Baltimore’s cultural landscape, introducing thousands of students to African heritage through workshops and performances in numerous venues, including the BMA, Walters Art Museum, and Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall.

Kibibi Ajanku, the visionary founder of Sankofa, is not only a prominent figure in

performance art but also a respected curator and educator. Her extensive travels across Africa have enriched her artistic practice, which often intertwines historical elements with contemporary art. 'Angela N. Carroll', a writer and art historian, has contributed significantly to the narrative of African art and culture through her critical essays and exhibition catalogs.

The BMA, founded in 1914, continues to inspire diverse audiences through its expansive collection and engaging programs. With free general admission, the museum strives to make art accessible to everyone, offering a space to experience the transformative power of creativity.

Don't miss this rare opportunity to connect with the rich traditions of Sankofa Dance Theater at the Baltimore Museum of Art!
