The Baltimore County Fire Department also confirmed the collapse, and the Maryland Transportation Authority advised motorists to avoid the bridge, part of Interstate 695.“I-695 Key Bridge collapse due to ship strike,” the agency said on social media.
A cargo ship collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge over outer Baltimore Harbor early Tuesday, causing a section of the bridge to collapse, according to authorities.
The Coast Guard received a report of the impact at 1:27 a.m. Eastern time, said Matthew West, a petty officer first class for the Coast Guard in Baltimore.
Detective Niki Fennoy of the Baltimore Police said the department was notified early Tuesday morning of “a partial bridge collapse with possible workers in the water.” Mayor Brandon M. Scott said he was “en route to the incident at the Key Bridge.”
The Baltimore County Fire Department also confirmed the collapse, and the Maryland Transportation Authority advised motorists to avoid the bridge, part of Interstate 695.
“I-695 Key Bridge collapse due to ship strike,” the agency said on social media. The extent of the collapse was not immediately clear, nor how motorists were crossing it when the ship struck.
Officer West said a Singapore-flagged cargo ship, the Dali, hit the bridge. The Dali is 948 feet long.
MarineTraffic, a maritime data platform, showed that a Singapore-flagged container ship of the same name was stopped directly under the bridge in the Patapsco River early Tuesday. The Dali left Baltimore at 1 a.m. and was bound for Colombo, Sri Lanka, according to the site.
A man who answered the phone at the Singapore offices of Grace Ocean, listed as the vessel’s owner, said the company was “still checking the situation” and declined to provide details.
The Maryland Transportation Authority, the Maryland Port Administration, and Mayor Scott’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The bridge, named after Francis Scott Key, the author of the American national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” opened in 1977.
