Attorney General's Office and the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency (MLGCA) Issue a Caution to the Public Regarding Scams and Fraudsters

To safeguard yourself against deceitful platforms and scammers, it's crucial to take necessary precautions. Alert Issued to Consumers with Additional March Madness Wagering Information to Help Protect Marylanders

As March Madness approaches, the Maryland Attorney General's Office wants to ensure that Marylanders stay on guard against scams and pushy marketing tactics aimed at enticing bettors to take bigger and riskier bets. The AG’s office sent out this important warning to all consumers who have signed up to receive valuable consumer information from our office. If you haven't subscribed yet, you can join our list by visiting this link: https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/MDAG/subscriber/new. Stay informed and protected!

Maryland residents can choose from a variety of sports betting avenues, such as mobile apps, online platforms, and in-person locations. These establishments excel at luring in bettors and encouraging them to wager more than intended, all while banking on the fact that you won't bother to review their terms and conditions. Moreover, online and app-based gambling poses a risk of falling victim to cybercriminals aiming to scam you out of your funds or sensitive data.

To safeguard yourself from deceptive information while considering sportsbook platforms, take these precautions:

1. Research consumer reviews and ratings on the Better Business Bureau (www.BBB.org). Additionally, you can contact the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 410-528-8662 to inquire about any filed complaints against the platform.

2. Pay close attention to the fine print on all promotions, especially those that seem too good to be true. It's essential to understand all the terms and conditions associated with these offers.

3. Familiarize yourself with the conditions or penalties set by the sportsbooks that may restrict how and when you can withdraw your winnings. Being aware of these limitations will help you make informed decisions.

To safeguard yourself against deceitful platforms and scammers, it's crucial to take necessary precautions. For reliable and authorized sports betting programs and organizations, you can find detailed information on the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency's website (www.mdgaming.com).

It's important to be cautious and disregard any online gambling pop-up ads, unsolicited emails, text messages, or social media messages. Even if they appear to be from a legitimate sportsbook, they might direct you to a fraudulent website.

In addition to this, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency (MLGCA) issued a consumer alert to help people make informed choices when it comes to wagering. This alert is specifically for those who have subscribed to receive consumer information from our office. If you haven't subscribed yet, don't worry! You can easily join our list by visiting this link: https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/MDAG/subscriber/new.

In Maryland, the only way to legally wager on sporting events is through licensed and regulated sports wagering operators approved by MLGCA. You have two options: you can either visit one of the 13 retail locations or go online and use one of the 11 websites or mobile apps that are licensed in the state. To find a comprehensive list of Maryland's current sports wagering licensees and their operator partners, simply click on this link: https://www.mdgaming.com/maryland-sports-wagering/.

Marylanders have the opportunity to legally engage in online fantasy sports competitions, but only with registered fantasy competition operators approved by the MLGCA. If you're looking for a list of qualified operators who are authorized to operate in Maryland, simply visit https://www.mdgaming.com/ancillary-responsibilities/fantasy-competitions/ and click on the Approved Online Fantasy Competition Operators section.

It's important to note that no other forms of online gaming are currently permitted in Maryland. This is because unregulated platforms can be risky, exposing users to potential fraud and identity theft. The Office of the Attorney General and MLGCA strongly advise against using illegal sports wagering or fantasy competition operators.

To ensure your safety, licensed gaming operators are legally obligated to implement measures that protect your identity and the funds you deposit into your account. They are also required to clearly display the terms and conditions of your account and any promotions they offer. The MLGCA has even prohibited licensed operators from using terms like "risk" to ensure transparency and fairness.

If you suspect any scams, promptly report them to our Consumer Protection Division or the Federal Bureau of Investigation through their website at https://tips.fbi.gov/.

Furthermore, it's essential to be aware that gambling can lead to severe financial losses if it becomes problematic. If you or someone you know is struggling with problem gambling, seek assistance from the Maryland Alliance for Responsible Gambling at https://www.mdgamblinghelp.org/ or call 1-800-Gambler.
