Attorney General Brown declares the convictions of Karon Johnson, 23, & Pierre Briggs, 23, both from Baltimore County, for their involvement in a Criminal Organization known as the "39 Babies" Gang

Attorney General Brown Reveals Convictions of Two "39 Babies" Gang Members for Involvement in a Criminal Syndicate. Karon Johnson, one of the defendants, has admitted his responsibility in two homicides, which were part of the ongoing violent activities carried out by the criminal organization between 2019 and 2020.

Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown has announced the guilty pleas and sentencing of Karon Johnson and Pierre Briggs, both 23 years old and from Baltimore. Their charges include participation in a criminal organization and related firearms violations, with Johnson also pleading guilty to two counts of first-degree murder.

These charges stem from a long-term investigation into a criminal enterprise in Baltimore City that was involved in violent acts, including murders, assaults, and firearms offenses, primarily in Baltimore’s Northeastern and Northern Districts.

“This criminal organization created a wave of violence that changed lives and devastated families across communities,” said Attorney General Brown. “I am committed to ensuring Marylanders have the safe neighborhoods they deserve, free from violence and crime. These guilty pleas send a clear message to violent offenders that their time is up.”

Johnson pleaded guilty to participating in a criminal organization, two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Deonte Henderson and London Stuckey, and using a handgun in a crime of violence. He was sentenced to life incarceration with all but 40 years suspended.

Briggs pleaded guilty to participating in a criminal organization and two counts of illegal possession of a regulated firearm. He was sentenced to 35 years of incarceration with all but 15 years suspended, and the first 10 years to be served without parole, followed by five years of supervised probation.

The investigation, led by the ATF, Baltimore City Police Department, and the Maryland Attorney General’s Office, began after the attempted murder of Perry Wainwright and the homicide of Deonte Henderson in February 2020. The investigation revealed that the criminal organization, known as the “39 Babies” or the “Green Team,” was responsible for multiple violent crimes, utilizing threats and violence to control territory and punish adversaries.

During the sentencing hearing, the mother of victim Deonte Henderson and a representative for the family of victim London Stucky spoke about the impact of the crimes on their families and the community.

Attorney General Brown thanked his Criminal Division, the ATF, Baltimore City Police Department, and the State’s Attorney for Baltimore City for their assistance in the investigation. Three remaining indicted defendants are awaiting trial. A criminal indictment is an accusation, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
